Mathematics
At Sir William Burrough, mathematics is taught every day as a core subject. All pupils, from nursery to year 6, follow the White Rose Maths small steps. This programme has been created by mathematics specialists who understand how children build conceptual understanding in mathematics using a variety of representations, opportunities for problem solving and reasoning and developing automaticity of maths facts.
Our teachers consider each ‘small step’ of learning and adapt teaching so that all children can achieve following a mastery approach. Teachers follow the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach to support the development of all pupils’ schemata and deeper conceptual understanding.
Pupils are also taught discrete maths fluency lessons, where children engage in learning opportunities that support their automaticity and efficiency when calculating in maths. For example, in maths fluency lessons, children will develop their number facts recall or mental arithmetic (e.g. doubling, halving and using known times tables facts).
